The Young Practitioners Mentoring Program is open to members (Affiliate, Associate, Fellows and CTAs) of The Tax Institute only. The benefits for mentees: - Guidance for your personal and professional development in the tax profession, from a mentor with a wealth of experience; - Connect with an experienced practitioner who can support you with your soft skills and enhance your career prospects; - Gain practical advice, encouragement and support; - Connection with a mentor based on carefully selected criteria to ensure the best match and great success; - Online training, support, webinars and content. - 9 CPD Units* The benefits for mentors: - Strengthened mentoring, coaching and leadership skills through practical mentoring as well as online training; - Insight into the diverse thinking of younger practitioners and practices within other firms as mentoring is a two-way learning environment; - The satisfaction of helping others and contributing to the next generation of tax practitioners; - Connection with a mentee based on carefully selected criteria to ensure the best match and great success; - Online training, support, webinars and content. - 9 CPD Units* The program will commence in April and run through to December with each participant committing to a 1:1 mentoring session per month, as well as conducting the online training module. Entry Criteria Mentee: - A young practitioner is generally someone 35 or younger. However, this program is also open to practitioners who might be over 35 and still relatively new to the profession. (e.g. those who have entered the profession later or have taken career breaks) - Member of The Tax Institute (Associate, Affiliate, Fellow or CTA) Mentor: - 10 years experience minimum - Member of The Tax Institute (Associate, Affiliate, Fellow or CTA) Fees and Finding your mentor: Please note there is an application fee of $99 (plus GST) for mentees. MENTEE DO's TAKE A PROACTIVE ROLE IN SHAPING THE RELATIONSHIP - Understand what you want from the mentoring relationship and communicate your goals and aspirations to your mentor. Balance personal and professional relationship with your mentor. - Set aside time for the mentoring process and keep all scheduled appointments with your mentor and display professional behavior. - PUT THE TIME WITH MENTOR TO THE BEST USE. Come to meetings with mentor prepared with planned topics. - Respond in a timely manner to your mentor's feedback. Respond to emails from your mentor at most two days after receipt. - Be open and honest with your mentor about your challenges and weaknesses. - If something concerning the mentor needs to be discussed with others, it should first be discussed within the mentoring relationship. MENTEE DON'Ts - Ask for advice on everything. We suggest you prioritise your requests. - Blame the mentor if his or her advice doesn't work out. - Expect the mentor to know all the answers. - Commit yourself to obligations you cannot keep. - Cancel meetings/visits with your mentor at the last minute.
Mentor DO's - COMMIT AT LEAST ONE INTERACTION/HOUR OF SUPPORT per month. - Set aside time for the mentoring process and honour all appointments. - Invite the mentee to meetings or activities, as appropriate. Schedule meetings with planned topics. - Be flexible on meeting times and places. - Arrange frequent contacts through telephone, email, fax, face-to-face, etc., as appropriate - Respond to emails from your mentee within 2 days of receipt. - Keep information that your mentee has shared with you confidential. If something concerning the mentee needs to be discussed with others, it should first be discussed within the mentoring relationship. - Establish open and honest communication and a forum for idea exchange. - Foster creativity and independence. Help build self-confidence and offer encouragement. - Provide honest and timely feedback to your mentee. - Provide opportunities for the mentee to talk about concerns and ask questions. - Above all, LISTEN. Mentor DONT's - Criticise. - Be too busy when the mentee needs your friendship or your support. If you do not have time, give the mentee a heads up, so that they know when they can reach you. - Provide your personal history, problems, animosities, successes, failures, etc unless they are constructive contributions. - Encourage mentee to be totally dependent upon you. - Try to give advice on everything.
